The Big One (23-7)

Wednesday the 19th of September 2012

Naburn Lock to Selby Basin.

I telephoned the lock keeper on arrival at Naburn yesterday and left a message to book passage through the lock today. When the Lockie came on duty he went round the three boats Nb Ondine, Nb Snowgoose and ourselves checking that everyone wanted to pen down today.

It was a cold one last night and we had the wood burner stove lit overnight. A clear sky and the stars looked to be very bright. Naburn lock is located in quite rural surroundings and in an area with few illuminated places nearby. The tall trees each side of the moorings also adds to the darkness.

By contrast the next morning the sun was quite warming but the wind remained cool as we headed down river towards Selby. A couple of boats passed going in the other direction. Quite a bit of debris in the form of tree trunks and large branches had to be avoided en route.

Wildlife: A pair of Buzzards, a couple of hunting Kestrel, a pair of Cormorants and large flocks of Goldfinch on the thistle heads.
