The Big One (18-5)

Dunham Woodhouse to Dover Bridge

An early start as we were expecting a long day. So it proved to be. the weather was cooler than it had been for the last few days. It remained overcast for most of the day.  The journey through Lymm, Sale and Stretford was uneventful. There were surprisingly few boats on the move.

We stopped in Worsley to have a sandwich and to buy milk. I took the dogs into the local park and let them chase the ball. A bit later I ended up in conversation with a council worker who said the visitor moorings are not a good place to be at night. So we decided once more to move on.

at Leigh, we stopped to visit Aldi for some shopping. Around lunch time a boater had left their boat for less than an hour. In that time period their boat was broken into a robbed. It took the police over four hours to respond to the couple. We had been going to stay in Leigh. However, it would seem to be tempting fate to stay in the area. We decided to move on.

We had to wait at Barton Swing bridge as a large vessel was moving up the ship canal. The the bridge then refused to close. It took about three quarters of an hour to fix the problem. This was only one of our delays. We had to wait for an hour and a half at Plank Lane for the traffic to die down. The bridge will not lift at the rush hour period. I took the opportunity to fill the water tank.

We were ready to moor up for the night, which is what we did just north of Dover Bridge. We had moored here last year and we knew it to be a safe quiet spot. Tomorrow there are the two Dover Locks, followed by climbing the Wigan 21!

Wildlife: I watched an amazing sight, just as it was getting dark. Around a thousand swallows were wheeling around in a big cloud. Each time the cloud passed over a group of trees, birds would peel out of the cloud and head into the trees.
