The Big One (5-5)

The weather has turned sour once more, we are back to heavy overcast and strong gusting winds. So I had a thought (a dangerous thing) it might be good to have a sail fitted to the boat. One that can be easily deployed and retracted if the wind changes to a less than favourable direction.

I read this morning of the dramatic rescue of a man who was taken ill on-board his narrow-boat. The man was reported to be, drifting in and out of consciousness. He was rescued by the fire service from the river Avon at Tewkesbury after being stuck on his boat because of flood water levels.

Because of the risk of finding oneself is such a situation. I always like to plan beforehand the places where we will stay. However, having a plan and being able to keep to it, is another problem altogether. We have a satellite navigation device on the boat. It's not for navigating the canals, (we have a set of Nicholson's guides for that)  its for being able to describe to the police and ambulance services in an emergency our location with reference to road names and bridges. It also comes in handy for giving directions to Tesco for their delivery drivers.

We let the stove go out overnight, however this morning on venturing a wary foot out from the bed. It was chilly enough to consider making the fire again. The dogs made a joint effort to join us in the middle of the night.  After the wonderful weather we had in February and March, I was hoping that we would be basking in Mediterranean type weather by now - Albeit with just a trickle of water down the centre of the canal. So I suppose all this rain does have a silver lining to the clouds.
